Towards a Framework of Operational-Risk Assessment for a Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship

Global research interest in the domain of maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) is dramatically increasing. With new prototypes planned to be set seas where various operational modes (OMs) are claimed, issue safety evaluation an MASS, and criteria for selecting appropriate OM given conditions remain open questions. This paper proposes a four-step risk-informed framework assess risk scenario MASS operating at one three OMs: manual control (MC), remote (RC), (AC). To this end, concept priority numbers (RPNs), adopted from failure mode effects analysis (FMEA), utilized. The required parameters defined RPNs obtained course analyzing model accident with expert knowledge. applicability proposed demonstrated via case study. Results reveal that, same scenario, varied across analyzed OMs. On basis aggregated results each mode, suggestions switching put forward.
